OUR BEGINNINGS…
It was a small group of caring and sensitive women in 1906 who identified a need in the burgeoning Jewish community: many elderly men and women were living alone in poverty and in poor health. With courage and commitment, they established the Daughters of Israel Home for the Aged on Sterling Street in Newark, New Jersey. As the needs of the community increased, the women responded by enlarging the facility and, in 1929, moved the Home to High Street, Newark. As professionals began taking on more of the administrative tasks, the women who, in prior years had been engaged in the actual running of the Home, were now free to direct their efforts toward long-range projects.
In 1956, this relationship was solidified with the formation of the Women's League.
Respecting Jewish family traditions, the Women’s League steadfastly works toward honoring its commitment to the elderly and disabled of our community. Our 1,000-member League is to the Home what the heart is to the body—a vital source of strength and life-support.
WOMEN’S LEAGUE PROJECTS…
Women's League fundraising has greatly enhanced the environment of the Home. We strive to enrich the quality of life for our residents by supporting the many outstanding projects of the Home through our fundraising efforts and providing volunteer services directly to the residents.
Some of our accomplishments to date include:
- Funding for the kitchen in our West Orange facility
- Refurbishing and operating the Gift Shop frequented by residents, families and staff alike
- Purchase of vehicles for transporting residents on outings
- Providing flowers on Jewish holidays as well as gifts for all of our residents on Chanukah, Mother’s Day & Father’s Day
- Providing funds for the current refurbishment of the Women’s League Pavilion
